Winners of the third annual European Information Security Awards announced at RSA

London, England— The organisers of the RSA Conference Europe 2005 announced the winners of the European Information Security Awards during the official opening of RSA Conference Europe. Winners were presented with their awards by the judges in front of an audience of around 1000 conference delegates including industry professionals, policy-experts, analysts and developers.

The European Information Security Awards 2005 winners:

Research and Development: Awarded to Mr Cyrille Bataller of Accenture Technology Laboratories. The judges were looking for individuals and organisations who have achieved excellence in the field of research and development, and whose initiatives showed significant promise of improving information security in the future.

Implementation: In this category judges were looking for security excellence in end user implementations, and selected FEDICT and Accenture as the winners for their “Belgian Government Federal Portal Secure e-Government Services to Citizens” project.

Education and Training: The award recognising innovation and excellence in this field was presented to Donna Richmond of Aetna. “Aetna is honoured to be recognised by the European Information Security Awards for its work in the area of information security education and awareness. We have successfully changed our corporate culture to one where protecting our information and the associated computing and communications infrastructure are considered vital to safeguarding and maintaining our competitive edge. Winning this prestigious award is confirmation of what we have achieved, and we intend to continue to make information security awareness and education a priority for Aetna.”

Policy: Awarded to Dr Steve Marsh of The Central Sponsor for Information Assurance (CSIA) in recognition of the development and promotion of information security through the development of policy. "I am delighted to receive this award in recognition of the efforts made by the Central Sponsor for Information Assurance and its partners in developing a coherent approach to UK Information Assurance policy, and consequent initiatives such as the CSIA Claims Tested Mark and the GetSafeOnline campaign."

Entries were judged by a panel of distinguished and independent judges including:

  • Professor Brian Collins, vice president, British Computer Society and Visiting Professor, Southampton University
  • Dr Burt Kaliski, vice president of research and chief scientist, RSA Security Inc.
  • Bryan Littlefair, global head of security research, British Telecom
  • Francisco Mingorance, director of public policy, BSA Europe
  • Professor Fred Piper, director of information security group, and Professor of Mathematics, Royal Holloway, University of London
  • Jim Reavis, founder and president, Reavis Consulting Group and Editor, CSO informer newsletter
