The previous best exhaustive search time for a DES key was considered to be 56 hours. The prize structure for this challenge is as follows:
| Time for solution | Prize |
| Less than or equal to 24 hours | $10,000 |
| Greater than 24 hours but less than or equal to 48 hours | $5,000 |
| Greater than 48 hours but less than or equal to 56 hours | $1,000 |
There is no prize for times greater than 56 hours.

The pseudo-contests provided as part of the original RSA Data Security Secret Key Challenge can also be used in this contest for software testing purposes.
