User Authentication and Data Protection Are Top Applications for Wireless Security
BEDFORD, MA. RSA Security Inc. (NASDAQ: RSAS), the most trusted name in e-security™, announced the results from a poll conducted during a recent wireless security Web broadcast attended by more than 500 security professionals. Sixty-eight percent of the attendees said they had already deployed a wireless application, or plan to do so within the next eight months. Results of the poll showed that the number one criteria for choosing a wireless encryption solution was interoperability with the wired Internet, as indicated by 47 percent of the attendees. Strength of the encryption solution was ranked second at 38 percent and performance ranked a distant third at only 15 percent.
"As companies deploy wireless applications, they can help maximize their security investment by ensuring interoperability with the existing Internet infrastructure," said Scott Schnell, senior vice president of marketing and corporate development at RSA Security. "The fact that RSA BSAFE® encryption software is already embedded in today's most successful Internet applications, including Web browsers, e-commerce servers, e-mail systems and virtual private network products, clearly played a role in the buying decision of leading vendors such as Ericsson and Matsushita, who recently licensed our encryption software for their wireless devices"
Other notable polling results indicated that:
- 51% of respondents think data protection is the driving security concern in wireless deployment, with 33% noting user authentication;
- Two thirds of respondents said that users will sacrifice convenience to protect privacy;
- 74% of respondents believe that wireless PKI will accelerate the growth of wired PKI;
- 59% of respondents think that underlying data network traffic, including voice over IP, will be the leading type of communications over wireless devices to push the market toward end-to-end security solutions, with 36% believing it will be applications such as email.
The wireless security forum featured a panel from leading companies in the wireless industry including: Mike Vergara, director of product marketing at RSA Security; Gary Lefkowitz, director of marketing for Atalla Security Products at Compaq Computer Corporation; Dr. Yiqun Lisa Yin, manager of security technologies at NTT Multimedia Communications Labs; and Barry Shelton, vice president of Wireless Knowledge, Inc.
