RSA Security Names Winners of 2001 Awards for Contributions in Mathematics, Public Policy and Industry

RSA® CONFERENCE, San Francisco— RSA Security Inc. (NASDAQ: RSAS), the most trusted name in e-security™, today announced the recipients of its fourth annual RSA Security Awards in the areas of mathematics, public policy and industry. The three recipients were Dr. Scott Vanstone, a noted cryptographer and founder of Certicom Corporation for Mathematics; the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Advanced Encryption Standard Committee for Public Policy; and Gemplus, a leading manufacturer of smart cards, for Industry. The prizes were presented today to representatives of the three recipients at the opening session of the RSA Conference 2001 in San Francisco.

Instituted in 1998, RSA Security's annual award recognizes individuals and organizations that have made significant, ongoing contributions to security issues and cryptography. A committee of members from industry, the academic community and the public sector selected the winners of the 2001 RSA Security Awards.


Mathematics Winner: Dr. Scott Vanstone
The RSA Award in Mathematics is presented to an individual or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of cryptographic sciences in the field of mathematics and its application.

Professor Scott Vanstone is Chief Cryptographer and Founder of Certicom Corp., and is also holder of the NSERC/Pitney Bowes Industrial Research Chair in cryptography at St. Jerome's University and the University of Waterloo. During his career, Scott has made significant contributions to several areas of mathematics including combinatorics, finite geometries, finite fields, algorithmic number theory, and cryptography. He is best known for fundamental work in the security analysis and efficient implementation of elliptic curve cryptography and its subsequent standardization and commercialization. In 1998, Professor Scott was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada's Academy of Sciences.

Public Policy Winner: The NIST's AES Selection Committee
The RSA Award in Public Policy is presented to an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to the application of cryptographic technologies towards the advancement of personal privacy, civil justice and basic human rights.

As a non-regulatory agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce's Technology
Administration, NIST helps strengthen the U.S. economy and improve the quality of life by working with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements and standards through four strategic partnerships: the Measurement and Standards Laboratories, the Advanced Technology Program, the Manufacturing Extension Partnership and the Baldridge National Quality Program. NIST's AES Selection Committee is responsible for formally proposing AES for incorporation in a new Draft Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) for public review and comment.

Industry Winner: Gemplus
The RSA Award in Industry goes to an individual or organization that has greatly facilitated the widespread use or application of advanced cryptographic technologies in the marketplace.
