Network Intelligence Customer Survey Finds Log Data a Vital Part of Business Operations
The value of analyzing all the data moves from security and compliance into actionable business intelligence across the enterprise

WESTWOOD, Mass— [Network Intelligence, a privately-held leader in transforming enterprise-wide data into compliance and security information, joined RSA, The Security Division of EMC, after its acquisition by EMC in September 2006.]

As compliance and security concerns continue to merge in the enterprise, IT departments increasingly are deploying security information and event management (SIEM) solutions not only to help handle that convergence, but also to uncover actionable business intelligence they can use to improve operational efficiency. These findings are the result of a customer survey conducted by Network Intelligence™ Corp., the market-proven leader in transforming enterprise-wide data into automated compliance and security information, at the company’s second annual user conference held in May.

More than 100 security and network administrators, CIOs and compliance officers participated in the survey which shows that 53 percent of users have expanded their original deployment of Network Intelligence’s enVision solution. Moreover, 92 percent of all respondents plan to continue to expand their deployments and 40 percent of those who have expanded listed something other than compliance audit or security as a driver of the expansion.

SIEM value has moved across a chain of users from the IT managers that traditionally purchased SIEM systems for compliance and security to the business intelligence consumers of the information. This value innovation stems from a combination of new features—such as online analytic capabilities for applications, databases and mainframes that deliver business intelligence and operations value.

Other key findings of the survey include:

  • Users are collecting data from an average of more than 2,400 devices and storing the data for an average of 30 months.
  • 34 percent of users are storing log data for five years or longer.
  • 34 percent of users bought enVision because their network devices were producing too much log data.

“It seemed quite apparent that the conventional wisdom in SIEM is that companies run regular compliance and security reports and alerts,” said Michael Sottile, senior security analyst, Fifth Third Bank. “What was obvious at the Network Intelligence End-User Conference was that my peers have followed similar roadmaps of deployment—what began as a departmental requirement for compliance or security has transformed into an enterprise-wide log management deployment for business intelligence across the enterprise. What we now see is a broader chain of consumers and more value reaching an upstream audience.”

“We saw several years ago that security and compliance were converging and that enterprises needed one solution to help them collect all the data and then manage and analyze that information,” said Jim Melvin, executive vice president of marketing and business development at Network Intelligence. “Our growing customer base has validated that belief and Network Intelligence is on the leading edge of the movement toward integrating security and compliance data into the larger enterprise operational strategy.”

enVision provides the software foundation for Network Intelligence’s appliance-based security and information event management (SIEM) solution for managing data created by network devices and applications and improving compliance, security and business operations.
