RSA Security Announces New Digital Rights Management Solution
RSA BSAFE® Mobile Rights Management software provides a critical security component for consumer device manufacturers and service providers to enable trusted digital content delivery services

CTIA WIRELESS I.T. & Entertainment 2004, SAN FRANCISCO— RSA Security Inc. (NASDAQ: RSAS) today announced a standards-based security solution for digital rights management (DRM) that delivers equal benefit to consumers, content owners, service providers and device manufacturers. With this new solution offering, RSA Security provides the security infrastructure needed to create a trusted network of devices with proven identity and access management, provisioning, strong authentication, certificate management and embedded security software. RSA Security offers a complete digital rights management solution for all participants in the digital content delivery value chain.

As part of the new solution, RSA Security is also announcing RSA BSAFE® Mobile Rights Management software which is designed to provide the components needed for 1) device manufacturers to create trusted devices that manage and enforce digital rights for content loaded onto those devices, and for 2) service providers and content management infrastructure vendors to secure content and protect it with appropriate rights before it is delivered to consumers. The new software also is designed to integrate with certificate management software (like RSA® Validation Manager) and identity and access management software (like RSA ClearTrust® web access management) to implement and manage the trust model needed to ensure content remains in the hands of the right consumers with the proper digital rights.

Converging technologies in the mobile device market have created new opportunities to deliver high-value digital content - music, video, games - to consumers over next-generation networks. To date, many solutions that protect content owners' rights have proven easy to circumvent or provide an unacceptable consumer experience due to limited device portability. RSA Security's solutions help solve these concerns through a security platform based on open industry standards, including the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Digital Rights Management 2.0 standard and the Open Digital Rights Language (ODRL) v1.1.

RSA Security's complete DRM solution delivers benefits for all parties in the digital content value chain. RSA Security helps:

  • device manufacturers - those who make mobile phones, PDAs, PCs, and portable digital music players - by providing the RSA BSAFE Mobile Rights Management software to authorize and enforce rights over the content, and the RSA Keon® Certificate Authority software for embedding unique digital certificates into devices so they can be authenticated as trusted devices. In the RSA Security OMA-compatible DRM model, content and rights are downloaded as encrypted objects from a content/rights server onto an authenticated device. An agent on the device uses the rights object to decrypt content and assert the appropriate rights to control playback, viewing, printing and copying. Content is valueless on an un-trusted device and without an associated rights object.

  • mobile network operators and other content service providers drive additional revenue from rich content services and differentiate themselves from competitors by providing a complete solution to create a rights management infrastructure. For instance, RSA Security supports registration and authentication of client devices through the RSA Validation Manager which performs real-time validation of the device certificates. These organizations can also use RSA ClearTrust software, combined with RSA Secured® provisioning partners, to manage user account identities, service access rights, and handle revocation of users. For those providers aggregating services from their partners, the RSA® Federated Identity Manager allows organizations to easily pass a user's identity from one partner to the other, without requiring the user to reauthenticate, creating a seamless consumer experience. RSA Secured partners enabled with RSA BSAFE Mobile Rights Management software provide the integrated content and rights management needed to deliver protected content to consumers. Finally, for those wanting to provide stronger protection of user identities for premium services, the RSA SecurID® two-factor authentication solution can help protect consumers and service providers from the threat of identity theft and phishing scams.

  • content management infrastructure providers secure their existing infrastructure software so their customers can launch protected digital content services. RSA BSAFE Mobile Rights Management software provides the components these vendors need to enable their systems to secure content and manage usage rights for service consumers.

  • content owners build new distribution channels and retain ownership of their property, while at the same time protecting the crucial relationship between consumers and content originators and artists. These organizations can use proven RSA BSAFE technology for encryption and digital signing to protect content at rest in content management systems as well as when it is readied for distribution.

"RSA Security's complete DRM solution ensures that the rights of content owners are fully protected, can create new revenue opportunities for content owners, and will establish rights portability for consumer devices," said Rick Welch, vice president of developer solutions and professional services at RSA Security. "RSA Security's leadership in the development of solutions that support open standards such as the OMA DRM specification will help drive the market toward delivery of interoperable and trusted devices, helping create a new marketplace for DRM built on a foundation of security, compatibility and portability."

RSA Security's nearly 20 years of experience developing security standards and technologies, including critical security protocols such as SSL, one of the backbones of internet electronic commerce, is brought to bear in the development of this critical solution for delivering secure digital content services. RSA Security is the co-author of the security components of the OMA DRM 2.0 standard and is a leading provider of cryptography and public key infrastructure solutions for mobile and other electronic devices.
