RSA Security certifies HP ProtectTools Embedded Security; Maintains commitment to open standards through joint efforts with Trusted Computing Group members
Bedford, MA. RSA Security Inc. (NASDAQ: RSAS) today demonstrated its ongoing efforts to improve computing security with other members of the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) with the announcement that HP ProtectTools Embedded Security, a hardware and software solution built on a security chip available on select HP business desktop and notebook PCs, has been certified as RSA SecurID® Ready under the RSA Secured® Partner Program. The RSA Secured Partner Program is one of the oldest and largest alliance programs of its type, bringing more than ten years of experience and hundreds of complementary solutions together.
RSA SecurID software tokens, as well as other RSA Security two-factor authentication solutions, can be used in HP ProtectTools Embedded Security to help reduce the complexity and cost of deploying strong authentication, help increase employee productivity, enhance remote and mobile access security and help reduce overall business risk. HP enterprise and public sector customers deploying RSA Security two-factor authentication solutions can identify users and devices before they interact with mission-critical data and applications through VPNs, email, intranets, extranets, web servers and other network resources.
The HP ProtectTools Embedded Security chip, designed to the TCG standard, incorporates core security elements into a single, independent hardware-based subsystem. The HP ProtectTools solution uses a combination of hardware and software features to establish platform identity for authentication and protected storage for sensitive user data and credentials. Embedded security modules add value to the use of RSA SecurID software tokens for two-factor authentication. The RSA SecurID system is as simple to use as entering a password, but significantly more secure.
“The combination of HP ProtectTools with the RSA SecurID solution provides a powerful option for securing a PC environment,” said Mark Schiller, director, Security Program Office, HP. “We will continue to work closely with leading partners such as RSA Security to build trusted platforms and infrastructures for our customers, in which security is built in from the very start.”
“More and more organizations are seeking flexibility in the way they deploy strong authentication solutions from RSA Security, whether leveraging the most popular forms such as RSA SecurID hardware tokens, software tokens, USB authenticators and smart cards,” said John Worrall, vice president of worldwide marketing at RSA Security. “Through our work with HP, we’re providing HP enterprise and public sector customers with one of the broadest choices for leveraging strong authentication in whatever form factor to further the goals of their businesses, reduce risk and improve productivity.”
Strong authentication has become a business imperative for organizations facing regulatory compliance governing the privacy and protection of digital information, such as Sarbanes-Oxley, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Gramm-Leach-Bliley. Through the RSA Secured certification, desktop customers are provided with a broad range of authentication choices for enabling secure remote and mobile access as well as helping customers meet regulatory compliance.
Used in conjunction with RSA ACE/Server® software, an RSA SecurID authenticator functions like an ATM card for a company network, requiring users to identify themselves with two unique factors — something they know (a password or PIN), and something they have (a Passcode generated from an RSA SecurID authenticator) — before they are granted access to secure business information.
RSA Security offers the broadest range of authentication choices including RSA SecurID authenticators, an RSA® Smart Card, an RSA® USB Authenticator and RSA Keon® digital certificates. RSA Security can extend the value of their RSA SecurID infrastructure through the use of RSA Security strong authentication in conjunction with RSA® Sign-On Manager for enterprise single sign-on (SSO) and simplified password management for Microsoft® Windows® client/server, web or mainframe applications and RSA ClearTrust® software for secure access to web-based resources.
RSA Security joined the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) earlier this year to support the development and adoption of open industry standards that will improve the security of computing environments and ensure the protection of digital assets. RSA Security, along with HP and other members of the TCG, are working to create open standards for use in products and solutions across the spectrum of computing to enable more secure data storage, online business practices and online commerce transactions, while protecting privacy and individual rights. RSA Security’s membership in the TCG is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting industry standards organizations that improve the functionality and interoperability of security technologies.
About the Trusted Computing Group
The TCG is an industry standards body, composed of computer and device manufacturers, software vendors and others dedicated to the advancement of trust and security in computing. It is a not-for-profit organization formed to develop, define, and promote open standards for hardware-enabled trusted computing and security technologies, including hardware building blocks and software interfaces, across multiple platforms, peripherals, and devices. TCG specifications are designed to enable more secure computing environments without compromising functional integrity with the primary goal of helping users to protect their information assets from compromise due to external software attack and physical theft.
