Background on Identity Theft
According to a Sept. 2003 Federal Trade Commission report, almost 3.25 million Americans discovered that their personal information had been misused due to identity theft in the past year. While some of this can be attributed to increased awareness and reporting, the fact remains that identity theft is a real problem that costs businesses and individuals billions of dollars each year. Any organization managing identities and customer information is vulnerable to identity theft and needs to be vigilant about securing that information. This calls for greater levels of security through robust identity and access management strategies. Companies must ensure the information systems in place are tamper-proof by:

  • Making sure information “at rest” is encrypted,
  • Properly authenticating users,
  • Monitoring access of users, and
  • Monitoring the “perimeter” for intrusion attempts.

If this is not done properly, identity information can be compromised and the trust of all identities in the system can be called into question.
