RSA BSAFE® Crypto-C Micro Edition software helps developers quickly and securely build FIPS validated embedded and wireless environments
BEDFORD, Mass. RSA Security Inc. (NASDAQ: RSAS), the most trusted name in e-security®, today announced the availability of RSA BSAFE® Crypto-C Micro Edition version 1.7 software, which has been recognized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic module. RSA Security’s first FIPS-validated cryptographic module for the RSA BSAFE Micro Edition solution suite is designed to enable developers to quickly, cost-effectively and securely deploy solutions for wireless and embedded environments that comply with NIST guidelines.
Wireless and embedded devices – such as cell phones, PDAs, cable modems and smart cards – offer government agencies convenience, mobility and choice in computing environments, enabling users to work more efficiently. However, unsecured applications and/or devices introduce unacceptable levels of risk. As a result, US and Canadian federal government agencies will only implement encryption-embedded applications or devices that adhere to strict security requirements. The compliance thresholds are established in Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2, a standard specifying the security requirements to be satisfied by a cryptographic module used within a security system protecting unclassified information within computer and telecommunications systems for the US and Canadian government.
Companies that sell cryptographic-enabled applications and devices to the government must adhere to FIPS certification, which can lead to significant product delays and validation costs. Since RSA BSAFE Crypto-C Micro Edition software has been validated to conform to the FIPS security requirements for cryptographic modules, licensees can more easily obtain FIPS validation for their own solutions. As a result, RSA Security’s solution not only helps government agencies meet security requirements, but also helps other technology vendors deliver compliant products in less time and at a lower cost.
“Security for encryption-embedded environments is a priority for the US and Canadian governments. Therefore, it has become imperative that our mobile synchronization solutions be FIPS validated,” said Senthil Krishnapillai, senior technical product manager at Extended Sytems, a leading provider of mobile information management solutions for the enterprise. “We turned to RSA Security to provide government-grade solutions across a variety of platforms for government customers.”
RSA BSAFE Crypto-C Micro Edition software is designed to offer great flexibility and choice by helping developers select only the algorithms needed in reduced code sizes. As a result of assembly-level optimizations on key processors, developers can use RSA BSAFE Crypto-C Micro Edition algorithms for ARM and MIPS processors and its FIPS-validated module is available on many platforms such as WinCE, Win 32, PocketPC 2002, Solaris, and Linux. In addition, RSA Security can port RSA BSAFE Crypto-C Micro Edition to other platforms upon customer request.
“RSA BSAFE Crypto-C Micro Edition products are optimized for wireless and embedded environments and are engineered to enable developers to maintain the highest levels of performance and security,” said Victor Chang, vice president, Developer Solutions division at RSA Security. “Now, our customers can build FIPS-validated solutions that help government agencies take advantage of the power of cryptographic-enabled applications and devices. This announcement is simply one more proof-point to RSA Security’s continued commitment to government compliance and unsurpassed innovation in the wireless and embedded markets.”
