Compaq's MultiPrime⢠Technology Provides Full-Strength Security - and High Speed Performance - for Wireless Solutions
RSA Conference 2000, Europe, Munich, Germany, April 11, 2000 RSA Security Inc. (NASDAQ: RSAS) announced today an agreement with Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) to bring advanced, new cryptography to wireless developers. The two companies announced a patented technology designed to process encryption/decryption tasks on handheld devices more than two times faster than previous methods.
Called MultiPrime, this new technology is designed to provide wireless and embedded device manufacturers the breakthrough they need to offer high-speed performance and enhanced security on small footprint devices such as mobile phones, pocket PCs and personal digital assistants. Both RSA Security and Compaq intend to incorporate the MultiPrime encryption technology into their respective products, and will work closely together on a series of joint technology and marketing initiatives aimed at propelling the rapid adoption of MultiPrime in wireless and embedded applications. RSA Security will be the exclusive licensor of cryptographic software development kits that feature MultiPrime.
The RSA algorithm has traditionally used two prime numbers to form a large, unbreakable key. The MultiPrime technology, which was developed and patented by Compaq, uses three or more prime numbers and parallelism to provide higher performance through smaller mathematical operations. Initial implementations of the new technology have already achieved more than double the performance of prior techniques, and further optimization and combination with other techniques may enhance the achieved acceleration. As a result, wireless device users dont have to choose between performance and security. For the first time, they have access to both critical functions in a single device.
"With MultiPrime technology, we hope to help speed the adoption of wireless solutions on a large scale," said Scott Schnell, senior vice president of marketing at RSA Security. "By developing a strong technology relationship with Compaq, we have found a remarkable method for enabling maximum security and performance which is key to the evolution of our ongoing wireless initiatives."
"Compaq has pioneered a wide range of security products, and these form a key element in the companys NonStop eBusiness solutions strategy," said Bill Heil, vice president and general manager of Compaqs Business Critical Server Division. "We look forward to working closely with RSA Security to deliver products that provide both strong security and very high performance."
RSA Security plans to incorporate MultiPrime across its entire RSA BSAFE® product line, and intends to first introduce MultiPrime in its implementation of the Wireless Transport Security Protocol, BSAFE WTLS C, which is expected to be released this quarter, and is designed to enable developers to more quickly and easily build security into WAP-enabled (Wireless Application Protocol) products and applications. This quarter, Compaq plans to incorporate MultiPrime in its specialized hardware security products to provide additional benefits to its customers.
