Funk Software Teams with RSA Security to Certify Odyssey and Steel-Belted Radius WLAN Security Solutions As RSA SecurID Ready
Strong WLAN security protocol EAP-TTLS is designed to allow WLAN users to be authenticated via RSA SecurID tokens

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. and BEDFORD, Mass.— Funk Software, developer of leading WLAN security solutions Odyssey and Steel-Belted Radius, and RSA Security Inc. (Nasdaq: RSAS), the most trusted name in e-security®, have successfully collaborated to certify compatibility between Funk Software’s WLAN security solutions and RSA Security’s market-leading two-factor authentication software. RSA Security has certified both Odyssey and Steel-Belted Radius solutions as RSA SecurID® Ready under its RSA Secured® Partner Program.

Both Odyssey and Steel-Belted Radius solutions are RADIUS servers that are based on the IEEE security standard 802.1x and are designed to handle WLAN access control and security. The joint Funk Software/RSA Security solution is designed to allow RSA SecurID token users connecting to an 802.11 WLAN via the strong WLAN security protocol EAP-TTLS to be authenticated by RSA ACE/Server® software via the Odyssey or Steel-Belted Radius solutions.

This joint solution presents the following security and deployment benefits to enterprise customers:

  • Sophisticated access control, providing strong two-factor defense against unauthorized access to an enterprise WLAN
  • Strong authentication security, which protects user credentials from attack as they traverse the wireless link, via the strong WLAN security protocol EAP-TTLS
  • Compatibility with 802.1x-compliant WLAN hardware, so network managers can deploy most vendors’ WLAN access points for use with the RSA ACE/Server software

“We’re pleased to strategically partner with RSA Security to provide an extremely strong WLAN security solution,” said Joe Ryan, vice president of Funk Software. “This best-of-breed joint solution allows enterprises who’ve already deployed the RSA ACE/Server software to confidently deploy WLAN access across their network, and achieve the same level of security they require for their other access paradigms. This joint solution is ideal for even the most security-conscious enterprises.”

“We are extremely pleased with the continued success of our RSA Secured Partner Program, and are pleased to continue the momentum with the addition of Funk Software,” said Stuart Cohen, director of partner development at RSA Security. “RSA Security and Funk Software are committed to developing and implementing secure user authentication within WLAN infrastructures – a critical requirement for driving profitability and ensuring trust in today’s mobile economy.”

Funk Software’s Odyssey solution is a RADIUS server specially designed to handle WLAN access control and security. It is built to provide strong WLAN security for smaller organizations or autonomous networks in larger companies where network access is governed by Windows user names and passwords. Steel-Belted Radius technology is appropriate for larger organizations which need to authenticate WLAN users against non-Windows authentication schemes such as RSA ACE/Server software and/or wish to integrate remote access and WLAN user management and security. In addition, Odyssey Server is designed to communicate with Steel-Belted Radius or other compatible RADIUS server to authenticate WLAN users in branch offices or distributed departments against non-Windows systems such as RSA ACE/Server software.

The strong WLAN security protocol EAP-TTLS is designed to provide strong authentication of WLAN users without requiring client certificates; instead it allows enterprise users to securely connect to the WLAN using RSA SecurID two-factor authentication software, or using their existing password credentials already set up in Windows or LDAP. These credentials are transported through a secure tunnel, and are protected against attack. Plus, as a result of authentication, session keys are distributed to help enable data privacy between client and access point.
