Nominations Open for the RSA Security Awards
Fifth Annual Awards Program Recognizes Outstanding Contributions in Mathematics, Public Policy and Industry

Bedford, MA— Organizers of RSA® Conference 2002, one of the world’s largest computer security events, today announced that it is accepting nominations for the fifth annual RSA Security Awards, which recognize individuals and organizations that make significant and ongoing contributions to the advancement of electronic security. The awards, to be presented at the 11th annual RSA Conference in February 2002, honor one winner in each of three categories: Mathematics, Public Policy and Industry.

“For the past five years, the RSA Security Awards have honored work that represents great achievement and stands as a milestone for the entire industry,” said Jim Bidzos, vice chairman of RSA Security Inc. and chairman of the RSA Conferences. “I anticipate receiving an impressive list of nominees poised to join the ranks of Ralph Merkle, Dr. Shafrira Goldwasser, Check Point Software Technologies, Netscape Communications and the many other prestigious individuals and organizations we’ve recognized since the inception of this awards program.”

Nomination forms are available at www.rsasecurity.com/company/rsaawards/ and must be submitted by January 25, 2002. Award winners will be announced at RSA Conference 2002 to be held February 18 – 22, 2002, in San Jose, Calif. The selection committee comprises members of the industry, academic community and public sector.

Criteria for each award category are as follows:

  • The RSA Security Award for Mathematics is designed to recognize innovation and ongoing contributions to the field of cryptography. The committee seeks to reward nominees who are pioneers in their field and whose work has applied value. Nominees should be affiliated with universities or research laboratories.

  • The RSA Security Award for Industry is designed to recognize outstanding contributions in commercial applications of data security, particularly those that provide clear value to the end user. The committee seeks to reward nominees in this category who have demonstrated ongoing innovation in their technologies and products.

  • The RSA Security Award for Public Policy is designed to recognize significant contributions and leadership in the national security policy discussion in the past calendar year. The committee seeks to reward nominees in this category who hold elected or appointed office or are associated with public interest organizations.

Last year’s recipients were Dr. Scott Vanstone, a noted cryptographer and founder of Certicom Corporation, Mathematics; Gemplus, a leading manufacturer of smart cards, Industry; and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Advanced Encryption Standard Committee, Public Policy.
